Ovarian Diseases Flashcards
What is the ovaries function
develop and release ovum
produce hormones to influence behaviour and affect organs to maintain pregnancy
How is ovarian function controlled ?
the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-gonadal axis with GnRH, FSH and LH
Name the stages of the oestrus cycle
pro-oestrus (oestrogen, 9d)
oestrus (female will allow herself to be mated, 9d)
dioestrus (progesterone, 90d)
anoestrus (between cycles, no activity, wide variation)
Define cystic follicular disease
cysts in follicles >2.5cm
accompanied by hyperoestrogenism, nymphomania and anoestrus
grossly, single/multiple cysts on one or both ovaries. THIN WALLED !
unknown aetiology
Define luteinized cysts
thick walled, fluid filled cysts of the ovary
can lead to infertility
seen in anoestrus
What is inflammation of the ovary called ?
oophoritis
Oophoritis grossly
ovarian abscesses
ovarian granulomas
Common infectious causes of oophoritis
tuberculosis
BVDV
Brucella (granulomatous)
Define intrafollicular haemorrhage
haemorrhage occurring during ovulation, often minimal
Define post-parturient vascular lesions
intimal proliferation of mucoid tissue un ovarian arteries and hyalinization of the walls of arteries and arterioles
Define egg yolk peritonitis
follicle falls into the cavity and is treated as a foreign body by the immune system, leading to fibrin deposition and peritonitis
Name some age related changes seen in the ovary
ovarian varicosities (varicose veins)
Define hydrosalpinx
watery mucus within the lumen of the oviduct
may be congenital, inflammatory or (often) traumatic
Define salpingitis
inflammation of the uterine tube, mainly bacterial
Define pyosalpinx
purulent accumulation in the lumen, mostly caused by bacteria
