What is the aetiology of pseudocyesis?

Common result of normal progesterone and prolactin production in metoestrus in non-pregnant bitch

What is the pathophysiology of pseudocyesis?
A
excessively elevated prolactin levels or increased sensitivity to prolactin.
Prolactin prepares mammary tissue for feeding pups.

Nesting Mammary development Milk production Nursing inanimate objects Anorexia Aggression

How is pseudocysesis diagnosised?
A
Based on clinical signs and history - stage of oestrus cycle and presence of milk in mammary tissue are diagnostic
Blood sampling may be carried to measure serum prolactin levels although this is seldom required
