reproduction - yr11 Flashcards
what is sexual reproduction?
when a human or an animal fertilises an offspring and requires 2 parents and the gametes carry the genetic information and are genetically different
what is asexual reproduction
when only 1 parent is needed to produce and the outcome is always genetically identical making them clones and there is no fusion of gametes or chromosomes
name 2 type of asexual reproduction
plants
bacteria
name 2 types of sexual reproduction
humans
animals
explain the process of mitosis
-chromosomes in nucleus are copied
-chromosomes that are copied get pulled apart and towards poles
-chromosomes separate
-cell divides into identical cells
explain the process of meiosis
-copies of the genetic information is made
-the cell divides twice to form four gametes, each with a single set of chromosomes
-all gametes are genetically different from each other
