inheritance - yr11/yr10 Flashcards
what is cybric fibrosis?
an inherited disease that builds up mucus in the lungs which causes struggling to breathe because of the build up of mucus therefore needing to exercise to get rid
what is polydactyl disease
a genetic disease which causes someone to have extra toes or fingers, which can be cut off optionally
what is a dominant allele
Dominant alleles are represented by a capital letter, for example you could use a B. The allele for brown eyes, B, is dominant.
what is a recessive allele
A type of allele that when present on its own will not affect the individual.
what is a gamete
a gamete is a sex cell. In humans, gametes are sperm and eggs
what is DNA
it determines the characteristics of a living organism
what is a chromosome
they are contained inside the nucleus they are always made of many genes
what is a gene
small sections of DNA on a chromosome that code for a particular sequence of amino acids
what is an allele
different versions of the same gene. For example, the gene for eye colour has an allele for blue eye colour and an allele for brown eye colour.
what is a genotype
The genotype
is the collection of alleles that determine characteristics and can be expressed as a
phenotype
what is homozygous?
alleles are both identical for the same characteristic, for example AA or aa.
what is heterozygous?
alleles are both different for the same characteristic, for example Aa
what is the male symbol?
XY
what is the female symbol
XX
