Reproduction study Flashcards
What is cell division?
Cell division is how organisms grow and repair themselves
What is reproduction?
Reproduction is a process by which organisms give rise to offspring
- there are 2 types of reproduction sexual and asexual reproduction
What is Asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction involves a single parent that produces offspring that are genetically identical to each other and to the parent
- all prokaryotic cells and some eukaryotic cells undergo asexual reproduction
- can be rapid and fast
- several methods= binary fission, fragmentation, and budding
What is binary fission?
Parent cell splits into 2 indentical daughter cells of the same size
What is Fragmentation?
Fragmentation occurs when a parent organism breaks into fragments or pieces and each fragment develops into a new organism
What is Budding?
Budding occurs when a parent cell forms a bubble like bud and the bud stays attached to the parent cell while it grows and develops
- once the bud is fully developed it breaks away from the parent cell and forms a new organism
What is Sexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction involves 2 parents and the parents produce reproductive cells/ called gametes that unite to form an offspring
- takes time
What are Gametes?
Gametes are reproductive cells that are haploid/ meaning that they only contains half the number of chromosomes (23 chromosomes)
- male gamete= Sperm - 23 chromosomes
- female gamete= egg- 23 chromosomes
-gametes are produces in meiosis
What is fertilization?
Fertilization is a process in which 2 gametes unite which results in a fertilized cell that is referred to as a zygote
what is a zygote?
A zygote is a diploid cell because it contains 46 chromosomes
- a sperm and egg cell untied creates a zygote and an embryo and fetus is formed from that zygote which reusltes in a child
