Reproduction Cycles/Fertility Flashcards
What hormone does the Hypothalamus produce?
GnRH
Gonadotropic Releasing Hormone
What two hormones does the Anterior Pituitary release?
FSH and LH
What is FSH?
follicle stimulating hormone, causes the maturation of the ovarian follicle (egg)
What is LH?
luteinizing hormone, causes the release of the follicle (ovulation)
What two hormones are released by the ovaries?
estrogen and progesterone
what organ does estrogen and progesterone target?
Uterus
how long is the luteal phase?
ALWAYS 12-14 days
How many uterine phases are there?
4, based on a 28 day cycle
Menstrual phase
days 1-6
estrogen/progesterone low, endometrium is shedding
Proliferative phase
days 7-14
estrogen rises, endometrium thickens, slight drop in basal body temp, change in cervical mucus
Secretory phase
days 15-26
Estrogen drops, progesterone rises, uterine vascularity increases
Ischemic phase
days 27-28
estrogen decreases, progesterone decreases, endometrium pales and becomes necrotic, sloughs off
How does cervical mucus change during ovulation?
increases, clear, thinner, stretchy, less hostile to sperm. more alkaline
What hormone is released when pregnancy occurs? What hormone is used in pregnancy tests?
HCG
What are the phases of the ovarian cycle?
Follicular and Luteal
