Oxygenation!

What ways do neonates attempt to preserve heat?
Flexion, peripheral vasoconstriction, non-shivering thermogenesis
What is given to the neonate within 1 hour of birth to promote blood clotting?
Vitamin K
What is given within 1 hour after birth to the neonate to prevent eye infections?
Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment
A neonate has an ID band on his leg, does he need another band?
Yes. one on the leg AND one on the arm
What is the first period of reactivity?
awake and alert, lasts 30 minutes
Sleep phase of reactivity:
decreased responsiveness, very sleepy, lasts 4 hours
Second period of reactivity:
awake, alert, hungry, lasts 4-6 hours
Does a pre term newborn have the same flexion as a full term newborn?
No, flexion increases with maturation.
more mature=more flexion
A neonate has apnea for 35 seconds at a time, is this concerning?
Yes, a normal period of apnea is less than 20 seconds
What is acrocyanosis?
hands and feet appear blue/purple, pink when blanched
What is Erythema Toxicum?
newborn rash, etiology unknown, benign, resolves in 1-2 weeks
What are the fine hairs on an infant?
Lanugo
What is molding?
cranium shapes to birth canal, bones may overlap, resolves in 48-72 hours
