Reproduction Flashcards
What happens during the fertilisation of a plant
A pollen grain lands on the stigma
Pollen tube grows from the grain through the style to the ovary
The nucleus from the make gamete moves down the style into the ovule
The nuclei of the male and females gametes fuse together, making a ZYGOTE. This divides my MITOSIS to make an embryo
The female gametes form a seed and he ovary becomes fruit
Two methods of plant asexual reproduction
Runners (eg strawberries)
Cuttings
What are the conditions for germination
Water ( to activate the enzymes that break down the seeds food reserves)
Oxygen- for respiration
Temperatures- ideal for the enzymes
Where is the energy used in germination from?
Glucose for respiration is held in the food store
Once the plant has grown enough to produce leaves, it’s can photosynthesise, producing more energy to grow
What’s Mitosis?
Asexual
Chromosomes line up,
Membrane forms around each set of chromosomes (become nuclei)
The cytoplasm divides
MAKING GENETICALLY IDENTICAL CELLS
What’s meiosis?
SEXUAL
produces for GENETICALLY DIFFERENT HAPLOID CELLS
What’s the role of oestrogen in menstruation?
Causes uterine lining to grow
What the role of progesterone in menstruation?
Maintains uterine lining
Define gene
Section of DNA that codes for specific protein
What is a phenotype
The characteristics produced by an allele
What is a genotype
The alleles present
Do male or females have XX chromosomes?
Female
