Reproduction Flashcards
Sexual reproduction
Involves fusion of male and female gametes
Because 2 parents, offspring contain a mixture of their parents’ genes
What does sexual reproduction produce?
Genetically different cells
Asexual reproduction
1 parent
No fusion of gametes, no mixing of chromosomes and no genetic variation between parent and offspring
What does asexual reproduction produce?
Genetically identical cells
Meiosis
Produces cells which half normal number of chromosomes
What does meiosis produce?
Gametes
What does the cell produced by gamete fusion do?
Replicates itself
Advantages of sexual reproduction
Mixture of 2 sets of chromosomes
Variation increases
Better adapted offspring
Can produce offspring with desired characteristics
Asexual production advantages
Only needs 1 parent
Uses less energy
Faster than sexual reproduction
Many identical offspring in favourable conditions
Examples of organisms that can produce by both methods
Malarial parasites
Fungi
Plants
