Reproduction Flashcards
What is DNA?
An enormous molecule that contains instructions for making a new life.
Where is DNA found?
In chromosomes.
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic acid.
What does DNA pass on to the offspring?
Genetic material.
What are chromosomes?
Thread-like structures that contain DNA.
What is the function of chromosomes?
Ensure that DNA is replicated and distributed during cell division.
How many chromosomes do humans have?
46 chromosomes and 23 pairs with one chromosome from each pair inherited by each parent.
Where are chromosomes found?
In the nucleus of a cell.
What are genes?
Sections of DNA in the chromosome that carry information.
What do genes code for?
Protein.
What role does protein have?
It has a huge role in expressing traits e.g. Eye colour.
What is a trait?
Genetically determined characteristics passed on to you by your parents.
What is asexual reproduction?
When the offspring is produced by only one parent and has the same DNA as it. This makes the offspring look identical to the parent.
What is sexal reproduction?
When the offspring is produced by two parents who give half their DNA from each of them to the offspring so that it looks similar but different to them.
What are gametes?
Special reproductive cells that each contain half the number of chromosomes as the parent cells.
