Fertilisation Flashcards
What are the female gametes called?
Eggs
What is the function of a female gamete?
It fuses with the male gamete to create an embryo.
What are the specialities of the female gamete?
1) It’s large to contain food for the growing embryo.
2) It has a protective jelly layer that closes once the male gamete enters it.
Where is the female gamete found?
In special organs called ovaries.
What are the male gametes called?
Sperm.
What is the function of a male gamete?
It has to swim through the female reproductive system and get to the egg to fuse with it and create an embryo.
What are the specialities of a male gamete?
1) had a long tail to swim
2) had a streamlined head to move faster
Where are the male gametes found?
In the testes.
What are the steps of reproduction?
1) millions of sperm are released into the female reproductive system
2 ) the sperm all have to race to the egg
3) only one sperm can enter and once it has, the egg creates a protective layer so that no other sperm can enter
4) the nuclei of both gametes fuse together (fertilisation)
5) after fusing, a new cell forms, divides several times, and forms a tiny ball of cells called the embryo
6)the embryo implants into the uterus of the mother and continues to grow
7)this eventually grows into a full-grown baby
