Reproduction Flashcards
What is the Oestrus Cycle
Pro-oestrus
- Increased follicular growth
- Increased progesterone levels
(The female is not yet sexually receptive)
Oestrus
- Follicles are maturing
- FSH & LH are at their peak
- Oestrogen increases until ovulation
(Female is sexually receptive)
Metoestrus
Corpus luteum produces progesterone
(Body preparing for pregnancy)
Dioestrus
Progesterone levels at their highest
(Animal will remain here if she falls pregnant)
Anoestrus
- Rest period for the reproductive system
- Rapid decline in progesterone production
(Length of this stage changes depending on the species)
Seasonally mono-oestrus
Undergo oestrus one time a year at predictable time. (E.g: wolves)
Dioestrous
Undergo oestrus twice per year (E.g: Domestic dogs)
Polyoestrus
Go through a succession of oestrous cycles during the year (E.g: Cats, cows & pigs)
Seasonally polyoestrus
Undergo oestrus cycles during particular times of year (E.g: Horses, sheeps & goats go into oestrus more than one time during a particular season)
Short-day breeders (e.g: sheep) are sexually active in fall or winter (due to length of pregnancy)
Long-day breeders (e.g: horses) are sexually active in spring and summer (due to length of pregnancy
