Cell transport Flashcards
Cholesterol
Keeps the membrane supple to prevent it breaking
Glycolipids
On the outer surface of the cell membrane and have a carbohydrate (sugar chain) attached to them
Structural proteins
Support the cells and give it strength
Receptor proteins
Detect hormones and neurotransmitters
Carrier or transport proteins
Allow certain molecules to pass through the cell membrane
Active transport
The movement of molecules across the cellular membrane through a protein carrier. Uses ATP
Passive transport
The movement of molecules across the cellular membrane via diffusion. Doesn’t use ATP
Diffusion
Movement of molecules across the membrane from a high concentration to a low concentration
Faciliated diffusion
Uses carrier proteins to move large and charged particles across a cell membrane from a high concentration to a low concentration
Endocytosis
Substances form a vesicle and push into the plasma membrane and then release their contents
Exocytosis
Substances held in a vesicle push their way out of the plasma membrane and then release their contents
Pinocytosis
If the substances moving into a cell is a liquid
Phagocytosis
If the substance moving into the body is a solid
