16
Q

What happens to the fertilized egg in the uterus?

A

Fertilized egg is implanted

The uterus provides an environment for the developing embryo/fetus.

17
Q

What are the tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus called?

A

Fallopian tubes

These tubes transport eggs (ova) from the ovaries to the uterus.

18
Q

What is the function of the ovaries?

A

Store eggs and secrete hormones

Ovaries are almond-shaped glands located on either side of the uterus.

19
Q

Fill in the blank: The _______ connects the uterus to the ovaries.

A

Fallopian tubes

Fallopian tubes are essential for transporting eggs.

20
Q

True or False: The vagina is responsible for transporting eggs from the ovaries.

A

False

The fallopian tubes transport eggs, not the vagina.

21
Q

What are the male sex cells ?

A

Sperm
-produced in the testes
- very small
- they have a head , middle section and tail
- the head contains DNA
- the middle section contains mitochondria
- they contain 23 chromosomes each

22
Q

What is semen

A

A fluid that helps the sperm swim and contains nutrients for the sperm . The mixture of the fluid and and sperm is called semen

23
Q

What are the female sex cells ?

A

-The Ovum ( Ova - plural) . -The Ova are produced by the Ovaries.
- There are 23 chromosomes in the Ovum.
- It has a nucleus , cytoplasm and cell membrane. The Nucleus carries the DNA and the Cytoplasm stores food for the ovum

24
Q

What is the name of the first cell formed after fertilization?

A

Zygote ( contains 46 chromosomes)

25
What is Ovulation?
The release of an Ovum from the ovary once every 28 days. (Menstal cycle prepares a womens body for ovulation and pregnancy and is approximately 28 days )
26
What is sexual intercourse?
A man will release semen into a female's vagina. The sperm will swim into the uterus and if there is an ovum fertilization will take place and a zygote will be formed.
27
What happens during fertilization?
1. When the egg meets the sperm cell a zygote is formed. 2. The zygote will start to grow through cell division. 3. The zygote will attach to the wall of the uterus and form an embryo 4. The uterus wall will form a placenta
28
What happens during pregnancy?
1. approximately 40 weeks long 2. The embryo will start to look like a foetus (unborn baby) after approximately 8 weeks 3. The foetus is attached to the placenta via the umbilical cord , which is where the baby gets its nutrients. 4. The developing embryo is protected by amniotic fluid.
29
What is infertility?
The inability of a man or woman to reproduce.
30
What causes infertility in men?
1. Impotence ( no sperm produced) 2. Low sperm concentration which can be caused by overheating, bad health, stress, or childhood diseases (mumps)
31
What causes infertility in women?
1. Ovulation doesn't occur 2. Shortage of hormones can prevent the zygote from attaching 3. Stress 4. Excessive acidity - can cause paralysis of the sperm
32
What are the forms of contraception?
1. Condoms 2. The Oral Contraceptive pill contains female hormones to prevent an egg from developing. It must be taken at the same time every day to ensure absorption. Antibiotics can interfere with the pill's efficacy. 3. Diaphragm- prevents pregnancy by covering the cervix and blocking sperm. 4. Intra-uterine device (IUD) - T-shaped device ( Minera- hormonal & Copper T) 5. Sterilization - Vasectomy and Tubal Ligation. 6. Hormone injectables/implants - prevent ovulation, paralyse fallopian tubes.
