Cardiovascular System 2 Flashcards
What are the 4 elements that blood consists of?
Plasma, Red blood cells, White blood cells and Platelets
What is plasma?
The liquid part of the blood consists of water. It transports nutrients, waste products, and gases in a dissolved form. (water, salts, nutrients and waste)
What are Red blood cells?
Biconcave disc shaped cells, small and flexible, they do not have a nucleus and transport oxygen.
What are White blood cells?
They are larger than red blood cells and they protect the body against infection and disease.
What are Platelets?
Fragments of cells that help blood clot and prevent bleeding.
What is the heart?
A muscle that continuously contracts and relaxes. Centrally situated between the chest, between the lungs, protected by the chest and ribs, and the same size as a fist. The 2 sides of the heart are separated by a muscular wall (septum) and consist of 4 chambers.
What are 4 cardiovascular diseases?
- Cholesterol (build-up of fat inside blood vessels that puts strain on your heart)
- Hypertension (abnormally high blood pressure caused by stress, smoking or obesity)
- Heart attacks ( a coronary artery suddenly becomes blocked, stopping the flow of blood to the heart and damaging it)
- Strokes ( Due to an issue with blood supply to the brain)
