representation disability Flashcards
what are the two veiws of disability
social model , medical model
what is the medical model for disability
argues disabled people are disabled by their physical or mental impairments , they suggest they need constant care and disabled people rely on the able bodied
what is the social model
disabled people are disabled by society , particularly stereotypes and prejudicial beliefs
what is the definition of disability
refers to physical or mental impairment which has substantial effect on a persons ability to carry out every day tasks
what are the 2 things that happen to disabled people in media
-symbollically annhiliated and reduced to crude stereotypes
-under-represented and invisible
what did barnes argue the media did to disabled individuals
media stereotypes individuals with impairments into categories that focus on one aspect of their impairment rather than examining individuals holistically as they would with able bodied people
what are 3 common stereotypes barnes identified
-super-cripple=seen as brave and courageous
-seen as burden on society and family
-pitiful or pathetic=recievers of charity
what is commonly pushed about disabled people in the media (to do with welfare)
watson found articles reporting on benefits for disabled people lead to negative media attention and lead people to believe that disabled people were fraudulently claiming benefits =feeds into idea of burden on society
how did shakespeare agree with barnes
agreed that representation of disabled people is one dimensional , lacks depth and fails to show disabled people as complete humans . Instead disability is used as a plot device and character trait. We rarely see normal life of a disabled person
what was the % of people in the most popular tv shows in 2013-2014 portrayed as disabled
only 2.5% and in most cases this was the main trait of the character and was used as a plot device rather than a character who just happened to be disabled
what does bad/lack of portrayal disabled people in media lead to
continued prejudice and social barriers for disabled people
what is shown that shows change to media portrayal
Paraolympics shows that disabled people can do the same sports as non-disabled people and can achieve which is empowering and breaks down negative veiws
how can paraolympics be criticised by ross
ross notes for disability to be represented it must be heroic or unexpected
how has social media helped disability portrays
allows for niche audiences to find communities with disabilities and show their normal life and spread awareness
