How is childhood socially constructed
it varies cross-culturally in western society adults and children are seen as very different e.g toys and parks whereas in other cultures childhood and adulthood are seen as less separate as they are veiwed as economic assets that can work
how are children mainly stereotyped in media
Stereotyped as needing protection and being vunerable as they are used in news especially as abuse and murder victims
how are the elderly often stereotyped
-a burden-they are discussed as a problem in news as economic burdens
-grumpy
-demented/confused
-having a second childhood
how are media companies now seeing the elderly
seen as section of society with more disposable money and leisure time than most
how did Lee say elders were presented by advertisers
positive representation as healthy ,active people enjoying golden age
what did robinson find about advertisers effect on people
-older viewers were attracted to advertisers that portrayed their age group positively
-media representations that poked fun at elders werent liked by any age group
=useful for media to appeal to everyone by positively representing elders
how are youth presented
in particular teens are presented as a problem in society
what do the news portray about youth
coverage of petty crime ,gangs and antisocial behaviour rather than commenting on positive things being contributed by youth for society
what did Wayne find about news coverage of youth
82% of news items concentrated on young people and violent crime as either being perpetrators
the media delivers a one-dimensional veiw of the youth that encourages fear and condemnation rather than understanding .This distracts from the problems being faced by the youth like homelessness and mental illness
what have youth often been used to achieve in society
media led moral panics where youth are targeted and seen as folk devils and are used as a scapegoat for societies issues
what was Cohen mods and rockers study
media focused on clashes between mods and rockers in society causing moral panics by over reporting on the issue leading to deviancy amplification where mods and rockers became more violent due to sensationalised headlines about each group
However some documentaries do show the youth in a more positive light for example..
-coverage of greta thunburg making changes for enviorment
-sex ed showing real struggles for the youth
