Renewable And Non Renewable Energy Flashcards
What is renewable energy?
Energy from renewable sources naturally replenished on a human timescale
Types of renewable energy
Solar power Wave energy Biomass fuel Wind power Geothermal energy Tidal power Hydro electric power HEP
Advantages and disadvantages of solar power
Advantage
No finite resources involved so less environmental damage
No atmospheric pollution
The sun is the greatest source of heat and light energy
Disadvantage
Needs the sun to shine
When demand is high not always to cope
Advantages and disadvantages of wave energy
Advantages take
Generated by the sea - water covers 72% of the planet
Always rough seas with bad weather
Tidal effect of the moon always creates moving sea and waves
Disadvantages
Hazard to shipping
Disrupt marine life
Advantages and disadvantages of biomass fuel
Organic material egAnimal waste and woody fuels
Adv. always available, no carbon dioxide release
Dis. Methane release, requires much water, can cause deforestation
Advantages and disadvantages of wind power
Wind can be strong and in some places blows most of
time
Adv. no fuel cost or polluting gases
Dis. Noisy wind farms, ugly to look at,not always windy
Advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy
Energy from hot rocks inside the earth
Adv. does not burn fossil fuel and very efficient
Dis. Costly to set up, not many suitable locations
Advantages and disadvantages of tidal power
Hydro power using sea tides
Adv. high energy density, inexhaustible source of energy.
Dis. Danger to sea life and shipping, erodes coastline, increases silt deposit
Advantages and disadvantages of HEP
Energy provided by water water power gravity and buoyancy
Adv. clean and renewable relying on water cycle
Dis. Dams cause geological damage, very expensive to build dams
Coastline - good for renewable energy and electricity but how?
Coastline is good for wave energy.
Electricity could be produced through wind energy and wave power.
Mountains - produce renewable energy but how?
HEP as water comes down the streams and rivers and can be dammed for HEP
HEP water pressure and gravitational energy and high rainfall
Wind energy from high winds on the mountains
How much of the earth is sea, hostile land and mountains and fertile for crops
3/4 sea
Of the rest 1/8 is hostile
7/32 is rocky
1/32 is fertile
