Greenhouse Effect And Causes Of Climate Change Flashcards
What is the normal greenhouse effect?
Suns energy reaches the earth’s atmosphere.
Some is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re radiated by greenhouse gases.
The absorbed energy warms the atmosphere and the surface of the earth
What is the increased greenhouse effect?
With more greenhouse gases and emissions being produced daily a large imbalance is created enhancing the greenhouse effect and making it stronger.
What is the main cause of climate change?
The increased amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
What are the good effects of climate change?
- Area and yield of cereals increase in U.K continental climate zones
- Higher potato, tomato and sugar beets yield in U.K.
3 maize vines and oranges can now grow in southern England
4 Mediterranean type summers in southern U.K.
5 longer growing seasons in northern Scotland
What are bad effects of climate change?
1.Increased temperature in already dry/hot poor countries may cause crop failure and then famine
2.melting ice caps cause ocean level to rise. Increased floods in low lying coastal areas in U.K. and worldwide
3 less snow for ski resorts in Scotland and Europe
4 wildlife extinction eg polar bears need ice to travel
5 species of plants and animals that cannot adapt to new climate will die out
6 arctic plants face extinction
7 more pests and disease due to mild winters
8 ocean temperatures change affecting climates around the world - more rain in some places and more droughts elsewhere
9 more unpredictable weather in U.K. - storms and floods
What is the effect of global warming on animals like polar bears?
In the arctic much of the ocean is permanently covered in ice.
Polar bears live on the ice in the arctic and need floating to travel.
When fuel burns carbon dioxide is produced. It is a gas that causes the greenhouse effect.
As greenhouse gases increase it causes global warming.
Average temperature increases with global warming
The more energy we use the more fossil fuels we need to burn.
As air temperature increases as ice melts
The number of polar bears will decrease
When the ice melts the polar bears lose their natural habitats .
