what does UTI stand for and what can it lead to ?
urinary tract infection
-cystitis-inflammation of bladder due to lessened excretion of urine
what are the symptoms of UTI?
-dysuria
-polyuria
-cloudy urine
-foul smelling urine
what else can a UTI lead to?
renal infection- due to reflux of urine back to kidneys
prostate infection
what is the treatment for UTI?
and how is it diagnoses?
-increase fluid intake
-rarely antibiotics
MSSU sample- mid flow sample
what can cause Urinary tract obstructions?
-kidney stones
-prostate enlargement
prostate enlargement is more common in who?
Men
how does prostate enlargement cause obstruction to urethra?
it passes through the prostate gland
-inflammation can narrow urethra
-benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate)
-prostate cancer
can all cause narrowing of urethra
what are the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy?
-hard to begin urination
-slow stream
-polyuria
-urgency
-incomplete voiding
what are the treatments for BPH?
-alpha blocking drugs and anticholinergic (to shrink gland size)
-diuretics- to increase urination
-surgery
what are renal caliculi?
kidney stones
where do renal calculi become stuck? and what is the treatment?
in the ureter-very painful
ultrasound waves break up large stones
what is bowel screenings for reliable for? and what is used as a diagnostic tool now?
screenings are best to monitor disease of those already diagnosed
mpMRI- can detect early cancers
where can prostate malignancy spread to ?
the skeleton and cause osteosclerosis
