Renal Neoplasms Flashcards
Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC)
A cancer of the kidney that originates in the cortex.
80-85% of primary renal neoplasms
2% of all cancers in the US
RCC Epidemiology
Males > Females
Highest incidence btw 60 - 80 yo
Types of RCC
Clear cell (75 - 85%) (PCT) Papillary (10 - 15%) (PCT) Chromophobe (5 - 10%) Oncocytic (3-7%) Collecting duct (rare)
Clear Cell Carcinoma (CCC)
Most common (75 - 85%)
Arise in the PCT
More commonly solid than cystic
Papillary (chromophillic) Carcinoma
10 - 15% of RCC's Arises in the PCT Trisomy 7 common Tends to be multifocal and bilateral Prognosis better than CCC
Oncocytomas
3 - 7% of RCC’s
Originates from intercalated cells of collecting ducts
Tends to be unilateral and singular
RCC clinical features
Triad: Hematuria, flank pain, palpable mass
Paraneoplastic syndromes
Scrotal varicocele
Polycythemia
RCC Dx
U/S
CT scan
MRI
Common sites for mets in RCC
Lung Lymph Liver Bone Brain
RCC Tx
Resection, nephrectomy
Radical Nephrectomy
Gold standard tx
Complete removal of kidney and friends
Hematuria, flank pain and palpable mass =?
Renal Cell Carcinoma
Wilm’s Tumor
Pediatric tumor (nephroblastoma)
Most common renal malignancy in children
4th mot common childhood cancer
Mean age of 3.5 yrs
Wilm’s Tumor clinical features
Palpable mass (common)
Abd pain, hematuria
HTN
Renal Papillary Adenoma
Arise from cortical renal tubules
Benign renal tumor
Usually contain trisomy 7 and 17
