Renal Imaging Flashcards
What are the imaging modalities used for the Renal system?
CT
Ultrasound
MRI
What are situations that may require imaging?
Mass imaging
Renal Trauma Eval
Eval of Hematuria
Kidney stones
WHat kind of stones aren’t seen on CT?
Cysteine
Uric Acid Stones
All w/ Ca++ Will be seen
Signs of Stones
Hydroureter
Perinephric Stranding
Soft tissue rim around white speck
What is perinephric Stranding?
Smudging of the edges of the kidney on CT due to edema
What is the DDx of Flank pain?
Diverticulitis
Appendicitis
AAA
When is US appropriate for flank pain?
In pregnant patients. will miss 30% of stuff
What is the goal of imaging in renal masses?
Used to charicterize the lesion and composition
What does Anechoic or Sonolucent mean?
Cannot reflect sound waves. A cyst. Looks black on US
What is attenuation in Imaging?
Decrease in intensity of the X-ray beam
What is enhancement in Imaging?
Change in density of a tissue following admin of IV contrast
What are Houndsfield Units?
Unit for attenuation values rang from (0 to 120?)
What is a non-simple cyst?
Thick wall Nodularity Calcifications Septations etc...
What is the Bosniak Classification?
Class of Cystic Masses I: Thin walls, benign II IIF: Need Follow up III: Highly suspicious for malignancy, Ca++ IV: Known Malignancy
WHat factors are evaluated in Mass Shape?
Shape
- tumefactive
- Infiltrating
