Renal Dysfunction Flashcards
What is Glomerulonephritis (GN)?
Immune-mediated damage to filtration membrane
What is the difference between primary and secondary Glomerulonephritis?
Primary
- Post-strptococcal or other infections
Secondary
- Following SLE, diabetes mellitus, amyloidosis hypertension
What does Glomerulonephritis cause?
- Inflammation of the glomerulus
- Inflamed glomerulus is less efficient causing a decrease in Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
- Inflammation causes filtration membrane to become ‘leaky’ (blood cells and large proteins)
What is the cause for Glomerulonephritis?
Type III hypersensitivity reaction
What is the difference between Nephritic and Nephrotic Syndrome?
Nephritic Syndrome is the inflammation of the glomerulus
Nephrotic Syndrome is where there is ongoing leaky basement membrane often leading to protein in urine
What is Renal Failure?
Where their is an impaired glomerular filtration rate with it being 40% less than normal
