Renal Flashcards
what is a dysproteinaemias?
Overproduction of immunoglobulin by clonal expansion of cells from B cell lineage
What is a myeloma?
Cancer of the plasma cells.
Presentation of myeloma?
Bone pain, weakness, fatigue, weight loss, recurrent infections.
BACK PAIN AND RENAL FAILURE
1st investigation for myeloma?
Protein electrophoresis and BJP
What is amyloidosis?
Deposition of extracellular amyloid in tissues organs
Pathogenesis of amyloidosis?
Abnormal folding of proteins which then aggregate and become insoluble. Breakdown of usual degredation pathways for abnormally folded proteins
What are the 2 most common forms of amyloidosis?
Primary/Light chain
Secondary/Systemic/Inflammatory
What is light chain amyloidosis?
Production of abnormal immunoglobulin light chains from plasma cells. Light chains enter the blood stream and cause amyloid deposits
Where does inflammatory amyloidosis usually affect?
Liver, spleen, kidneys and adrenals
What is vasculitis?
Inflamed blood vessels
