Remanufacturing Flashcards
What is remanufacturing?
The process of rebuilding a product, during the process the product is cleaned, inspected and disassembled, defect components are replaced, reassembled tested and inspected again to meet or exceed the standards of a newly manufactured product
What is core?
Its the used/brokendown products (or components) aimed for remanufacturing
Give examples of reman. products
Engines, computers, desks and copy machines.
What are synonmyms to reman?
Refurbishment and renovation
What are the steps in the reman process?
- inspection
- cleaning
- disassembly
- store
- reprocess
- reassembly
- testing
What happends in inspection
You identify the malfunctions/errors and base the inspection from a failure report
What happends in cleaning?
- Choose cleaning technology and clean it
What happens in disassembly?
Valuable parts/components are put i storage
The broken parts are sent to material recyling or end-of-life treatment
What happends in storage?
Products, parts and components are stored until reassembly
What happends in reprocess?
Reprocessing of parts if neccessary
Re-filling with new material
What happends in reassembly?
Can you integrate with ordinary manu? - Perhaps not, ord. manu. is at a higher pace
- Choice of fasteners
- Upgrading product parts
- Upgrading software
What happends in testing?
You check:
- Function
- Safety
- Quality
What are reman. company charactheristics?
- OEM
- Contracted
- Individual
What are the company drivers for reman?
- Profit
- Cost reductions,
- customer demands
- new product sales eg product service systems - Environment
- Legislation
- Moral ðical issues - Policy
- Protecting aftermarket
- Protecting brand
What is a Product service system?
A PSS is aimed to be selling the function of a product rather than the product itself.
For example: selling copies instead of copy machines
PSS means changes in material flows (se bild i block)
How is PSS a driver for reman?
- PSS reduce the uncertainty of when and how many cores that arrive to reman.
- Gives possibilities of condition monitoring that can provide useful data for reman.
- It facilitates OEM reman. with much product data knowledge from reman and good feedback loop to product design.
How can you overcome though reman challenges?
With PSS and full core knowledge
How is reman good for the environment?
- End-of-life hierarchy
- Less operation steps. You dont need to extract raw materials etc to get the product since its already there
What are reman. customer values according to companies?
A more price-worthy option in comparison to new products.
It provides a faster solution and is a good option to discard used products
What are the economic challenges with reman?
- Staying competitive/profitable
- Core access
- Lack of customer awareness
- Product design issues
- Process efficiency issues
What are reman. key resources?
- Technical staff
- Access to cores
- Facilities, machinery and equipment
What are the companies view on environmental benefits of reman?
- Reduced material consumption
- Reduced CO2 emissions
- reduced energy consumption
What are the social benefits of reman?
- Job creation
- More access to products
- events (charity)
What are the main three markets of reman i the EU?
- Automotive
- Investment goods
- Consumer products
What does PSS offerings consist of?
Combination of physical products, services and systems that have been integrated and optimized from a life cycle perspective in relation to the customer value
What is the key to realizing effective PSS?
Information flow. It is important to make the information useful and to get a good understanding. –> Actors and System map Method can be used
What are the reman. industry sectors in Sweden?
Automotive, machinery, Computer, Toner cartridges, medical equipment, wood industry, office furniture
Give examples of reman products in the different industries
Automotive: engines, brakes Machinery: heat exchangers, forklift, trucks Computer: PCs, printers, scanners Toner cart: cartridges for copy machines Medical: wheel chairs Wood: wood pallets and packaging
How does reman products stand in comparison with a new from an environmental aspect?
A new engine 9,8 kg C02, a reman is 0,53 kg CO2 at UBD cleantech
How is the ideal life-cycle of THM forklift trucks?
Long term rental 3-7 yrs. Short term rental after that in 1-3 months. Then remanufactured –> used –> remanufactured and used and lastly scrapped
In what way is reman good for the environment?
- Reman is prefarable option in comparison with new manufacturing and other end-of-life options.
- Chances to close the loop for safer handling of toxic materials
