What was the domestic situation/ returning exiles?
People were confused and uncertain after religious upheaval. Once Mary died, the 800 exiles returned to England from places like Zurich, Frankfurt and Geneva. However they were not a united group. Bishops appointed by Mary were not prepared to compromise
What was the foreign situation?
England were still officially at war with France. Unable to hold Calais, its lost was seriously resented Although Elizabeth wanted peace she was reluctant to give up Calais. France was a largely catholic country and negotiations may have been easier if England wasn’t protestant. Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis April 1559.
What were Elizabeth’s personal beliefs?
- Suggested dislike for Catholic practices
- Wanted to retrain certain some Catholic traditions as she liked the music, silver crosses and rich vestments.
