Elizabeth - Later Years Flashcards
Purveyance
1593 - the Commons asked for a remedy over the issue of purveyance, but William Cecil replied that the request infringed royal prerogative and could not be debated. However, the queen accepted there was a problem and agreed to deal with it.
Relations with parliament
Because of the war with Spain, Elizabeth summoned four parliaments in the period after 1588 as she needed money. The continued demands brought on by the war did mean that later parliaments were less willing to grant supply, but this must also be seen in the context of the poor economic situation.
Succession
Peter Wentworth had written a pamphlet in which he urged the queen to decide which claimant to the throne had the best claim.
The Council sent him to the Tower, where he died in 1597. This ended the issue and preserved the queen’s prerogative without her having to act

Monopolies
The issue came to a head in 1597. Elizabeth had used monopolies to reward courtiers as the pressure of war meant little money was available for pensions. When the matter was raised, Elizabeth agreed that those monopolies which were responsible for rising prices on basic goods should be cancelled.
