Why do Jewish people have religious clothes?
Jewish people can wear different items of clothing to express their faith and religious identity as a Jewish person
What is the Tallith?
-This is a prayer shawl traditional worn by Jewish men during prayer.
-The Torah says “make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments”
What is the Tizitzit?
- knotted fringes attached to the tallit prayer shawl. There are 613 fringes to represent the 613 mitzvot rules.
-reminds Jews of the laws given by God to Moses e.g. “Do not kill”
What is the Tefillin?
-leather boxes that contain parts of the shema traditionally worn by men during prayer
-It is mitzvot to wear the Tefillin: “bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead” - The Torah
-They remind Jews to love God in thought and action
What is the Kippah?
-These are skull caps traditional worn by Jewish men. Many men wear them to show that they are Jewish.
How does Jewish clothing influence their life?
-Jewish men, and some Reform Jewish women will wear these special items of clothing to show their Jewish identity to the rest of society.
-They are worn as a mark of respect to God and to acknowledge that God is transcendent (above and bevond creation).
