What are the Tenak and Torah?

A
  • The Jewish Bible, consisting of the Torah (the five books of Moses), the Nev’im (prophets) and Ketuvim (writings)
    -The TeNaK is the main sacred text in Judaism. The Torah is the most important part of the TeNaK as it contains the mitzvot rules. The Torah teaches Jews how to act, live, worship and be good people. It forms the basis of daily life
    -e.g. “keep the sabbath day holy”

What is the Talmud?

A

-collection of writings on Jewish law and tradition.
-it contains the Mishnah: the first written version of Jewish oral law. It included teachings that were originally passed down by word of mouth on how to understand the Torah and apply its rules to daily life.

How do the Jewish Religious Scriptures influence the lives of orthodox
Jews?

A

Orthodox Jews will study the Torah and the Talmud throughout their lives, usually at a synagogue library. As Orthodox Jews believe that the Torah contains the most important teachings from God, they will try to follow the mitzvot rules from the Torah very strictly.

A

Reform Jews believe that the Torah was written by humans and so should be understood as a divine book from the time it was written. This means that Reform lews internet the rules and teachines for our modern-day society.
