What is faith defined as?
Faith is a strong belief or trust in something or someone, even when there may not be concrete evidence or proof
What are the three Characteristics of Faith? Know how to briefly explain each one.
Belief Without Proof-Believing in something without concrete proof or evidence of it existing
Trust and Confidence-Having a strong sense of trust and confidence in the object of faith
Hope-Faith often carries an element of hope and optimism about the future or the outcome of a situation
What does the term ‘revelation’ mean?
How something is revealed or made known
How does God reveal himself to us? (i.e. Through what ways?)
Through scripture, Jesus, people, events, and the world around us
What is the Incarnation?
The Incarnation means “becoming flesh”
-God became human (flesh) in Mary’s womb
-Jesus is the son of God
-He is Begotten, not made.
-He is One in essence with the Father.
What is the Holy Trinity? Be able to understand the concept of 3 persons in 1.
We believe that God is three persons (God the Father, God as the Son, and God as the holy spirit) who share the same substance
What is a covenant? What are the two types of covenants?
Originally, covenants were agreements between a ruler and their people.
-Conditional convent: The receiver must meet certain obligations or conditions of the covenant BEFORE the giver is obligated to fulfill what was promised
-Unconditional convent: Fulfillment for what is promised depends solely upon the authority and integrity of the one making the covenant (for example, God)
What is The New Covenant? What does this covenant promise us?
Jesus and the world.
This covenant promises us Forgiveness of Sins only if you repent and eternal life in heaven with god
What is a creed? What are the two main creeds of the Catholic Church?
A creed statement of belief. The Catholic Church has two creeds – the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed
Be familiar with the Apostles’ Creed.
What are the four marks of the Church?
One, holy, Catholic, and apostolicity
What are the four Dogmas of Mother Mary? Be able to explain each one.
- The Immaculate Conception - at the time of her conception, Mary was conceived in her mother’s womb without original sin.
- The Divine Motherhood of Mary - Jesus was conceived in the womb of Mary without human seed; Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
- The Perpetual Virginity of Mary - Mary’s virginity was maintained before, during and after the birth of Jesus.
- The Assumption of Mary into Heaven: Mary was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her life.
What is the Immaculate Conception?
Refers to the belief that Mary was conceived in her mother’s womb without original sin.
What is the Holy Spirit? What can it often be compared to? Why?
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and God’s presence. The holy spirit is often compared to the wind. Just like the wind pushes a leaf through the air, the Holy Spirit guides us through life
What is Pentecost? What happened? What is Pentecost also referred to as in the Church?
Pentecost marks the beginning of the Church’s. Each of The Apostles was blessed by the Holy Spirit. They could now speak in tongues clearly so that all could understand them and hear their message. It is also referred to as the “Birthday of the Church”
