Line
*A continuous mark made on a surface by a moving point.
* An outline, contour, or silhouette.
Colour
The reflection of light through pigment
Value
The lightness or darkness of non-coloured objects
(Shading, hatching, stippling,etc)
Form
3D objects that have a sense of volume (space within the form) and mass (the outer size/bulk).
Texture
The surface quality or feel of an object; it’s smoothness, roughness, or softness.
Space (Positive & Negative)
The distance or area between, around, above, below, or within objects
Positive-the object
Negative- the space around the object
Shape (Organic & Geometric)
- An enclosed space defined and determined by other elements.
Types of shapes: - Geometric- Precise shapes which
can be described with mathematical
formulas. - Organic- irregular, uneven, occur in
nature.
Balance
The equilibrium of the various elements in the artwork
Emphasis
The point of interest in a design that catches the viewers attention. Can be achieved by being the largest, brightest, or lightest subject.
Harmony
Is when similar/related elements are combined
Unity
A sense of oneness or harmony, all parts work together as one
Rhythm
The flow of smooth transition of repeated elements form one part to another
Movement
The path the viewers eye takes when looking at a pice of artwork
Gradation
A step by step or gradual change of one or more elements
Proportion
The pleasing relationship of all parts to each other and to the whole of the design
