What was the relationship like between the king and the pope?

A

Erastian - the popes did little to interfere with the running of church in England and the king was firmly in control. Popes were generally eager to grant favours demanded by the king. The church was run in England through two provinces, Canterbury and York, under the jurisdiction of an archbishop and seventeen dioceses, each under control of a bishop. The two with most power under Henry VII wee John Morton and Richard Fox.

Why were criticisms of monastic life increasing?

A

The Abbots, heads of wealthy religious houses, had to demonstrate the spirituality necessary to maintain reputation of their houses. Not all lived up to these demands.

A

The church provided the framework for individual thought, reasoning and behaviour.

How many parish churches were there in England at the time and what did the church offer?

A

There were over 8000.
Festivals provided entertainment, and it’s guilds and confraternities provided charity and good fellowship. The church made it easier for the social and political elites to maintain control through the encouragement of good behaviour, obedience and stress on values of the local community. They also offered employment and social advancement through the attainment of high office in church and state.
