Henry VII's Government Flashcards
What did courtiers enjoy?
Paid positions or the right to receive free food. They were part of a court where advancement could be attained and where the support of the king and other influential figures could be obtained.
How did the king respond to the treasonable plot with the Lord chamberlain and Perkin Warbeck?
To remodel the chamber by creating a new privy chamber, where the king could retreat with the protection of his most intimate servants. This made it more difficult for those who were out of favour to regain his support.
What was the council’s main offshoot?
The Council Learned,, who’s responsibility it was to exploit the king’s prerogative rights and to maintain the king’s revenue. It made bonds and recognisances work and entrap the king’s subjects. It wasn’t a recognised court of law and subjects couldn’t appeal.
How did Henry replace the Earl of Northumberland after his murder in 1489?
He was replaced with the earl of Surrey, who had been a traitor of Bosworth to the northeast. This was very risky, but he proved his loyalty through his effective service for ten years.
How did Henry keep control on a local level?
Henry relied on Justices of peace to keep control in the countryside. It was common for royal officials to be appointed as JP’s in an area of interest to them, but most common for the local gentry. They were responsible for routine administration, such as tax assessment, alehouse regulation, maintenance of law and order and investigating complaints against local officials.
In what way was Henry inexperienced in financial matters?
At the start of his reign, income had dropped to about £12000, because income from lands was being administered through the inefficient court of exchequer. It was in 1492 when Henry reverted to Edwards administration through the chamber. Finances improved markedly, and by the end of the reign income from lands had increased to £42000 per year.
