-whether religion becomes a force for radical change is affected by:
>religions w/ strong moral codes are more likely to have critical members therefore take action

-whether religion is radical depends on whether it causes conflict
-tensions highlight capacity of religions to challenge social order
-serious conflict is highest where deep religious divisions coincide w/ political/ social divisions
-fundamentalism is inherently political
Global religious conflict
-Israel/ Palestine partly due to Muslims/ Jews
-Protestants/ Catholics in Northern Ireland
-fundamentalist groups e.g. islamic fundamentalism i.e. Al Qaeda

-any challenges which generate insecurity may be addressed by leaders
-authority to challenge ‘new’ ideas come from sacred books
-‘us & them’ mentality
-use modern tech to spread message

-Taliban= Afghanistan based on interpretation of Qu’Aran
-women forced to dress modestly, no female education past 8yo, executions for cheating, music banned, amputation for theft etc
-9/11 attacks by Al Qaeda led to change in US foreign policy inc invasion of Afghanistan

-conflicts apparently based on religion are abt other issues e.g. Palestine/ Israel is over land
-Bruce= religious factors are mixed w/ non-religious factors (palestine is where nationality/ethnicity is mixed w/ religious differences)

conflict between Islam & West is caused by US foreign policy, not religion. USA often intervene in Muslim countries and support regimes against ordinary muslims
