What is Scientific Truth?
Truth that has been found by theory and evidence - experiment and testing
What is a Religious Truth
Truth that is claimed by religious believers due to faith and belief evidence coming from conscience, experience and tradition.
What was the Big Bang?
Scientific explaination as to the origins of the universe - The universe started from a small point and has rapidly expanded over time.
What is the Creation story put forward in the bible.
The 7 days of creation is put forward in Genesis chapter 1 (Genesis is a book in the bible)
On each day God is said to have created something -
Day 1 - Night and Day
Day 2 - Sky and Earth
Day 3 - Land and Sea
Day 4 - Sun and Moon
Day 5 - Sea Creatures
Day 6 - Plants Animals and Humans
Day 7 - God rested!
What does a ‘Creationist’ believe?
People who believe the story of creation in the Bible is true.
What is a myth?
A story with truth in it, but not necessarily scientific truth but moral truth - e.g. Hare and tortoise.
What was the ‘Cosmological Revolution’?
Period of time when people realised that the world was round - it went around the sun - and the earth was not the centre of the universe.
What is Evolution??
Scientific fact that the world as we know it has come about by millions of years of change and battle for survival.
What is Natural Selection (with reference to evolution)?
The scientific fact that some species survive and others die off depending on survival of the fittest. Species adapt to their surroundings and survive.
What does the term ‘Absolute Truth’ mean?
Something that is fixed and unchangable that is true for all times and cultures.
What does the word ‘authority’ mean?
Something that has power and deserves obedience.
Why did people think the world was flat?
Three reasons!
- Their senses seemed to suggest it - when they looked to the horizon the earth seemed flat (you have to go a mile into the air to see the curve of the earth).
- It is easier to see us as the centre of everything - it gives humans meaning and explaination.
- The truth is unbelievable - we are spinning at 1,000 mph and travelling around the sun at 67,000 mph!!
