What is a crime?
An offence that is punishable by law
What is a sin?
A religious offence
What is a punishment?
Something done to a person because they have broken the law
What is retribution?
punishment that seeks revenge

offenders must be punished to show that the law is right and should be respected

to change a criminals behaviour for the better
What is deterrence?
to put people off committing crimes
What is reparation?
to repay the debt to society, e.g. community service

keeping the public safe from being harmed, threatened or injured by criminals

someone under th age of 18 who has broken the law
What is imprisonment?
when a person is put into prison for comitting a crime
What is forgiveness?
showing grace and mercy and pardoning someone for what they have done wrong

being truly sorry and trying to change one’s behaviour so as not to do it again
What is capital punishment?
the death penalty
What us community service?
unpaid work that an offender performs for the benefit of the local community rather than going to prison

an offender has to wear an electronic device which tracks their movements to ensure restrictions of movement are made
What are fines?
money payment as punishment for a crime or other offence
What is probation?
an alternative to prison where an offender has to meet regularly with a probation officer to ensure they do not re-offend. Movement may be restircted
What is parole?
when a prisoner is released without having completed their sentence, because they have behaved well and accepted their guilt. The prisoner is put on parole
