An offence that is punishable by law

Something done to a person because they have broken the law

to change a criminals behaviour for the better

to repay the debt to society, e.g. community service

when a person is put into prison for comitting a crime

showing grace and mercy and pardoning someone for what they have done wrong

being truly sorry and trying to change one’s behaviour so as not to do it again

the death penalty
What us community service?
unpaid work that an offender performs for the benefit of the local community rather than going to prison

an offender has to wear an electronic device which tracks their movements to ensure restrictions of movement are made
What are fines?
money payment as punishment for a crime or other offence
What is probation?
an alternative to prison where an offender has to meet regularly with a probation officer to ensure they do not re-offend. Movement may be restircted
What is parole?
when a prisoner is released without having completed their sentence, because they have behaved well and accepted their guilt. The prisoner is put on parole
What is life imprisonment?
a prison sentence that keeps a person in jail until the day they die

a prisoner is released from prison even though they have not served their full sentence, or fulfilled the criteria of getting parole

a movement that tries to ensure offenders are treated humanely in prison
