What is the purpose of wedding rings?
As they are a circle, they represent how marriage is for life.
What are the Christian marriage vows?
(Name), will you take (name) to be your husband? Will you love him, comfort him, honour him and forsaking all others, be faithful to him as long as you both shall live?
What is a civil partnership?
A union of same sex couples with similar rights to marriage.
It is to formally recognise their relationship and only ends of a partner dies or by applying to court.
It can’t be ended unless it has lasted a year.
Church of England allow unlike Roman Catholic.
What is a civil marriage? (Non-religious)
Marriage involving a non-religious heterosexual couple or a same sex couple.
This is conducted by law without any religious involvement. (A religious ceremony does not necessarily meet the legal requirements for a marriage).
Heterosexual marriages were always legal but same sex marriage became legal recently. You can marry if you are: 16+ Not already married Not closely related
Church of England allows same sex marriage but Roman Catholic Christians oppose.
Marriage should be between a woman and man.
Discuss:
Church of England: agree as the wedding vows state to be your “husband/wife” but don’t fully agree as they allow civil marriage services for same sex couples.
Catholics: strongly agree as they oppose same sex marriage and don’t allow civil marriage services.
Islam: agree as they believe the purpose of marriage is to have children and raise them as Muslim therefore marriage must be between man and woman.
Atheists: mixed as it is a free opinion and is up to them but many believe everyone should have equal rights.
What is divorce and annulment?
Divorce: the legal termination of a marriage. The couple are free to re marry afterwards.
Annulment: unlike divorce, this means that the marriage was cancelled or never actually took place properly.
What is the Roman Catholic view on divorce?
They do not accept divorce.
They are very strict and believe its a sacred bond so if they remarry, they can’t receive holy communion.
In the eyes of Roman Catholics, a couple is married for life so remarriage is adultery.
Annulments are often allowed which is a deceleration that the marriage never took place properly.
What’s the Church of England view on divorce?
Does not accept divorce as their general policy is not to remarry divorcees in a church ceremony but some vicars allow it.
What are the free church views on divorce?
Many accept divorce and allow remarriage in a church ceremony.
They believe marriage doesn’t end by physical death but by the death of the couple’s love that can end a marriage.
They believe it’s better if their new marriage is blessed by the church.
Divorce quote
“What god hath joined let no man put asunder.”
