1
Q

What are the Islamic views on the soul?

A

Allah gave each person an individual soul which they try to keep as clean and pure as possible.

Humans are given a status above animals. Some feel eating meat distracts from a spiritual life.

The soul is unique and free and is what will be judged on the day of judgement.

Q

What were Plato’s views on the soul?

A

He didn’t believe in god but believed there’s a soul which continues when we die.
He also believed the soul consisted of 3 parts in unity:
Reason (logos)
Emotions (thymos)
Desires (eros/pathos)

His opinion can be related to a horse and chariot. The soul is the chariot in control of the horse - the soul controls the mind and body

The soul pre-existed the body and death separates the two.

Q

What were Aristotle’s views on the soul?

A

The soul gives body life. Body and soul cannot be separated.
Body + Soul = One

Without the soul, the very essence of the body wouldn’t exist.
This is described as the axe, the handle is the body and the axe itself is the soul.

Q

What takes place during sightings of dead people?

A

[Dr Chopra] argued that bodies are made of energy and when a person dies! their energy keeps the image of that person.
Others say ghosts are dead people who’ve come back and there are many arguments to prove they’re true.
Disbelievers feel sightings are tricks and seeing ghosts is just seeing past events.

Q

What are the Christian views on Hell?

A

Some believe it’s a real, physical place. People who don’t go to heaven go to hell.

Some believe hell is not a physical place but rather an existence without God. All of those who don’t go to heaven experience this.

Others believe a merciful God would not allow any of his children to go to hell. Non-Christians will get another chance.

Q

What’s purgatory?

A

Purgatory is a Roman Catholic belief of going to a place before heaven where you will stay (and possibly endure suffering) until their souls are ready for heaven.

They believe it is like a waiting room where souls often are in pain or tortured however people who go to purgatory which reach heaven eventually and aren’t at risk of going to hell.
The church taught that living relatives could shorten the time souls stayed in purgatory by praying for the dead. In the Middle Ages, people bought ‘indulgences’ which were meant to give them time off purgatory by giving money to church. This was stopped as the system was abused.

Q

What are the Christian funeral rites?

A

It’s a reminder that they’ll live forever with God.
Most funerals include bible readings, hymns, prayers, tributes and eulogies.
Traditionally, they’re buried in a cemetery although some feel the soul is more important so cremation is becoming more popular. Orthodox accept nothing but burial.

The final part is the committal when the coffin is lowered or curtains cover the cremation coffin.

“We now commit his/her body to the ground: earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust: in sure and certain hope of resurrection to eternal”

20
Q

What are the Islamic funeral rites?

And quote

A

Near death, people gather around the dead/dying person and recite shahadah - “There is no a God but Allah and Muhammed is his messenger” to reaffirm they’re Muslim before death and hoping for life in paradise.

Areas (for wudu) are washed first then the rest of body - it’s perfumed and wrapped in white clothes.

They don’t use a coffin and cremation isn’t allowed as full bodily resurrection is anticipated at judgement day.
Burial at night is avoided and they’re buried feet first with their face in the direction of ka’bah.

As the grave fills with soil, people say “from the earth did we create you, and into it shall we return you and from it shall we bring you once again”.

Only men attend the funerals and the grave is modest and has no decoration.

A

The believe God is eternal and is believe to be present at the start of the world.
God is the ultimate judge and it’s after death that they believe God will judge each human individually according to the way they’ve lived, their faith and their actions.
The book of revelation in the bible states that there are two books: one with the names of those who have shown belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection and one with all the deeds people have done in their lives.

33
Q

How are people (Christians) judged?

A

Christians believe they’ll judged to determine their future in the afterlife based on their actions and beliefs on earth.
Within the bible in the parable of “The Sheep and the Goats”, explaining how God will judge humans. It expresses that, like sheep and goats, humans will be separated into 2 groups (sheep on the right, goats on the left) and those who have lived good lives and followed Jesus (right side/sheep) will be rewarded while others spend eternity in hell.

34
Q

How does God as the judge link to life on earth and the afterlife?
And quote

A

According to Christians, it is your life and actions which determine how you’re judged.
This has an impact on the behaviour of many Christians as they live their lives aware of the consequences of the afterlife so try to live according to God.
This encourages many to live morally.
Christians should recognise when they do wrong and confess this to God.
This outs their trust in God.

“For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.”

45
Q

“Heaven can be reached by everyone.”

A

Christian ideas about salvation and redemption could be used to argue that the gospel message is for all and heaven can be attained by all.

Differences between the denominations may be cited eg Roman Catholicism and purgatory and their views of heaven or other religious groups such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and their view on the Day of Judgement and the Elect or the Chosen Ones.

Some candidates could argue against any form of afterlife in heaven or anywhere else, using references to well known atheists’ views such as Richard Dawkins, Francis Crick and Stephen Hawking stating there is no evidence of life after death so such statements are irrelevant.

Other candidates could introduce discussions from other religious viewpoints such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism and their different routes to and views of heaven.

It could be argued that humans can create ‘heaven’ on earth by actions, deeds and words.
Humanists may point to an existence where the good of humanity comes first in all deeds and actions, creating a kind of heaven for all on earth.
