What were examples of CONCILIATIONS between CATHOLICS and Nazis
A
- On the 20th July 1933, Hitler and the Pope signed the Concordat- which said that if Catholics keep out of political activities, the Catholic Church will have guaranteed freedom (LIE 2 yrs later Ministry of Church Affair)
- In 1937 Pope Pius XI issued an encyclical with the title ‘With Deep Anxiety” - where h spoke out against Nazi excesses

What were examples of HOSTILITY between CATHOLICS and Nazis
A
- The Ministry of Church Affairs was set up in 1935 by the Nazis and tried to weaken the Catholic Church - they tried to censor Catholic press and organise harassment of Clergy
- Over 400 Catholic Priests were sent to Dachau concentration camp alone
- On the 22nd March 1942, Bishop Von Galen led an attack on the Nazi policy of executing the mentally ill. His comments led to the official ending of the euthanasia programme

A
- In 1933, on the Day of Potsdam, the Nazis gave the impression of unity between Nazism and Protestantism in a symbolic ceremony at Potsdam Cathedral
- Nazis united Protestant Churches in July 1933 by amalgamating 28 Protestant churches into one ‘Reich Church’

- 200 Pastors refused to join the Nazi Reich Church and set up their own non-Nazi breakaway Church called the ‘Confessional Church’ led by Martin Niemoller.
