reliability and validity Flashcards
reliability
- consistency
internal rel = how consistent a test or wtv is WITHIN ITSELF
external validity = how consistent the results are overtime
validity
accuracy
internal validity = how accurately a test is measures something that it says it measures
external validity = extent to which results can be generalised to other people/situations
in external validity =
ecological = to which extent does the findings reflect real life behaviour
temporal = to which extent are these findings true over time
measuring realiblity
observations - inter observer reliability ( already have flashcard on it)
self report - test retest reliability
test retest-
1. test administered first time
2. same test given at later date
3. compare results by correlation , looking for correlation of 0.7 or higher
measuring validity
concurrent validity -
- test produces similar results to already established and trusted test that measures the same thing
face validity -
test appears to measure what its supposed to measure just by looking at it
improving reliability
questionnaires -
test retest is low ? , change question to close question to avoid confusion
interviews-
improve reliability , leading questions = removed
experiments-
standardised instructions
observations-
use clearly defined behavioural categories that dont overlap
improving validity
questionnaires
- ensuring anonymity to reduce social desirability
experimental research
control group , standardised procedure
observations
covert observations (unaware they’re being watched)
