Reliability and validity Flashcards
What is the difference between reliability and validity
Validity is does it it measure what you want it to measure (getting the desired results)
Reliability is looking at if it provides a consistent measure (the results are consistent)
What are 4 types of validity
1) Internal validity
2) External validity
3) Construct validity
4) Ecological validity
Construct validity
Looks at does it measure what it should
- Content validity: are we measuring all aspects of what we are trying to measure
- Convergent validity: does the measure correlate with other measures measuring the same thing
-Discriminant validity: does the measure have little correlation with other measures for a different topic
Internal validity
Was the study run in a way we can be confident what we measured is what we wanted to an it was not affected by other factors or variables. And there’s no alternative explanations for our findings.
External validity
Are findings replicated in other samples. Can findings be generalised to other populations and situations. Replication?
Ecological validity
Type of external validity.
Does the methodology used allow conclusions to be drawn about these processes in the real world? Can findings be generalised to a real world setting.
Inter- rater reliability
if multiple people collected the data with the same method would results be the same.
May be low due to different due to experimenters. Can be increased using further guidance of how to carry out the experiment.
Test- retest reliability
Are the collected scores the same if collected on two separate occasions where a factor may change
Internal consistency reliability
Are the collected scores the same across all parts of the measure.
Can be measured using split- half reliability where dividing items in half and measuring correlation- measure of internal consistency.
Or using Cronbach’s alpha which should be between 8 and 9.
