Designs and variables in psychological research Flashcards
What are the 4 forms of research
1) observational techniques
2) interviews and surveys
3) correlational research (finding correlation between variables)
4) experimental research (measures effects of a change)
What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative data
Qualitative data is an observation or interpretation or descriptive data. Whereas quantitative data contains numerical or statistical results which can be quantified
What are the 2 types of variables? with explanations
1) Continuous variables which exist on a continuum
2) Categorical variables where there are specific categories to be classified as. These can be in any order
What are the 3 types of experiment designs with explanations?
1) Frequency: how many people fit under each category- banner
2) Experimental: changing an independent variable to see if it creates any changes.
3) Correlational: there are not independent of dependent variables, measure what is naturally occurring to see if there is any relation. They must be continuous variables with increase or decrease. Correlation does not mean causation.
Types of experimental designs with explanations
1) Experimental design: participants are randomly allocated a group
2) quasi- experimental design: groups are pre- defined by characteristics.
AND
1) Independent measures design: separate groups complete experiment and results are compared.
2) Repeated measures design: participants repeat the experiment under different conditions.
4 different ways to measure data and explanations
1) Nominal data: number of people belonging to a category.
2) Ordinal data: data is in order but intervals may not be consistent.
3) Interval data: in order with fixed intervals and negatives.
4) Ratio data: in order with fixed intervals but no negatives .
