Reliability Flashcards
Define internal reliability
The extent to which the measure used in a piece of research is consistent within itself and produces a consistent experience for all participants
Define eternal reliability
The extent to which the procedure and results can be replicated so that the same study can be conducted in future and gain similar results
How can reliability be tested?
Internal -split half
External-test test
-inter rater
Describe split half test
Measures the extent to which all part of the test contribute equally to what is being tested
How is the split half test conducted?
A test is split into two parts and then both parts are given to one group of students at the same time. The scores from both parts of the test are correlated
Describe test retest
Measures the consistency of a test over time
Describe inter rater test
The extent to which 2 or more independent observers agree with each other on what they saw in the same participant/event
Give factors that increase reliability
- use of experiment method ie high control
- controls such as standardised procedures and instructions including some training
- quantitative data
- large sample size
- in observations use at least two observers
Give factors that decrease reliability
- research methods with no control ie case studies
- lack of standardised procedures
- qualitative data as it can be interpreted in different ways by different people
- small sample size
