Aims and hypotheses Flashcards
define the term hypothesis
a testable statement or prediction in which the variables are clearly stated in measurable terms
what does the aim do?
tells us why the research is taking place
which is more precise hypothesis or the aim?
hypothesis
define the term operationalising
when the variables are clearly stated in measurable terms
what is the IV?
the variable which the researcher manipulated and which is thought to be the cause of a behaviour
what is the DV?
the variable that changes as a result of the effect the independent variable has
describe a two tailed hypothesis
- directional
- specific about the direction of the results
describe the null hypothesis
- non directional
- not specific about the direction of the results
- predicts a change occuring as a result of the iv but not the direction
describe a one tailed hypothesis
predicts no difference between the 2 variables
Give the writing frame for a one tailed hypothesis (experimental)
participants who (condition 1 of the IV) will ( refer to the DV and its expected direction of change) than participants who (condition 2 of the IV)
Give the writing frame for a two tailed hypothesis (experimental)
there will be a significant difference between (the DV) between (condition 1 of the IV) and (condition 2 of the IV)
Give the writing frame for a null hypothesis (experimental)
there will be no significant difference between (the DV) between (condition 1 of the IV) and (condition 2 of the IV)
why is it important to have a null hypothesis?
so the research is considered scientific the hypothesis should be capable of being shown wrong
Give the writing frame for a two tailed hypothesis (correlations)
it is predicted there will be a relationship between co variable 1 and covariable 2
Give the writing frame for a one tailed hypothesis (correlations)
there will be a positive relationship between covariable 1 and co variable 2
