Relationships Flashcards
Intraspecific
completion within a species
Interspecific
competition among different species
The competitive exclusion theory
Two different species attempt to occupy the same niche and the better competitor survives and reproduces
Abiotic Factors
non-living factors contributing to the distribution of species including; sunlight, oxygen concentration, climate, rainfall ph. levels, carbon dioxide levels, soil type
Biotic Factors
is any living component that affects another organism
Competition
Individuals competing with each other for the same resource such as food, water, minerals, territory, nesting sites and mates, if it is intraspecific competition
Predator/prey
The predator hunts, kills and eats the prey. Only the predator benefits
Symbiosis
interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association
Mutualism
an association between two organisms where both partners benefit from the relationship (e.g. Lichen: algae + fungi, tick on zebra)
Collaboration/ co-operation
This in an association between two organisms where both benefit from a loose relationship (e.g. penguins huddling together for warmth)
Commensalism
This is an association between two organisms where the commensal gains whilst the host neither gains nor lost (e.g. plants perching on trees to gain light for photosynthesis, tree does not benefit or lose)
Amensalism
This is an association between two organisms in which one impedes or restricts the success of the other without being affected itself (grazing mammas trample plant, the plants die but the mammals are unaffected)
Parasitism
this is an association between two organisms in which one, the parasite, lives temporarily on (ectoparasite) or in (endoparasite) the other, the host, deriving benefit from it and causing harm to it
Antibiosis
One species benefits by producing a compound which inhabits the growth of another organism (e.g. alleopathy: a plant releases toxic compounds into the soil which prevent nearby plants growing. The allelopathic plant benefits by reduced competition.
