Food Chains and Webs Flashcards
Producers
autotrophs- organisms that can produce organic molecules from simple inorganic molecules with the aid of an additional energy source
Consumers:
Is a heterotroph- an organism that gains nutrients from complex organic molecules (Heterotrophs ultimately depend on autotrophs)
Type of consumers
- Primary consumers: organisms that directly eat producers
- Secondary consumer: organisms eating primary consumers
- Tertiary consumer: organisms eating secondary consumers
Decomposers
a microorganism (bacteria and Fungi) that breaks down the dead organic matter to create inorganic matter
Detritivores
organisms which feed on pieces of partly broken down plant or animal tissue known as detritus
Scavengers
feed on dead organisms
Top Carnivores
organisms at the top of the food web/chain- have no predators
Omnivore
eats both plants and animals
Herbivore
eats only plants
Carnivore
eats only animals
Trophic levels
feeding levels
Food Chains
A sequence which represents the way in which energy is transferred from one organism to another. Each stage in a food chain is referred to as a trophic level: Nettle plant large nettle ladybird. Arrow represents direction of energy flow
Food webs
A diagram which shows the way in which different species of organisms in a community depend on each other for food
Both food webs start with a producer which gains its energy from a source such as sunlight. Energy is lost through respiration and waste such as faeces and urination
