Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
Nitrogen
Nitrogen in the air cannot be utilised by animals. However nitrogen is needed for growth repair and maintenance
Nitrogen fixation
through lightning: Harber process-making fertilizer: nitrogen fixing bacteria in root nodules of leguminous plants
Nitrifying bacteria
ammonia nitrite nitrate
Denitrifying bacteria
nitrate N2 gas
Nitrogen in animals and plants is in the form of amino acids and proteins. As one organism eats another along the food chain, the nitrogen passes from one organism to the other
Consequence introduced trout:
Introduced species
Trout has no natural predators
Organisms in the lake have no adaptions to cope with trout
Trout will eat smaller organisms with no defences
Trout will out compete organisms for food
Change in temperature can cause reduction in suitable habitat:
Increase in bush fires Loss of shelter Loss of biodiversity Less water supply Loss of vegetation
