Define chastity.
Chastity is the belief that you shouldn’t have sex before marriage.
Define celibacy.
A relationship where both parties have resolved not to have sex.
Define adultery.
Adultery is cheating on you partner with another party.
What does Islam teach about sex?
- Sex is a gift from Allah
- Sex must be part of marriage; sex before marriage forbidden in the Qu’ran
- “Do not come near adultery” - Surah 17:32
What is the Christian view of childbirth?
That it is a central part of marriage.
What is the Roman Catholic view on contraception?
Roman Catholics are totally against artificial contraception. Instead they encourage natural means such as the rhythm method.
What is the Protestant view on contraception?
Artificial contraception is allowed as long as both parties consent to its use.
What does Islam teach about contraception?
- Many are for the use of contraception if the wife agrees.
- Some believe that contraception interferes with Qadar - the idea of predestination. If Allah wants you to have children then it will be so.
What are the features of a standard Christian marriage ceremony?

What are the features of a standard Muslim marriage ceremony?
1) The marriage contract is read out. It contains information on the mahr (dowry) among other things.
2) The couple sign the contract three times.
3) Readings from the Qu’ran
4) Prayers for wealth, longevity and fertility
5) Walimah (wedding feast)
What is the Roman Catholic view of divorce?
They do not accept divorce because marriage is a sacrament and cannot be undone in the eyes of the Lord. However, the marriage can be annulled if the marriage wasn’t consummated.
What is the Protestant view of divorce?
It is permitted if it is the most compassionate thing to do.
What is the Roman Catholic view of re-marriage?
It counts as adultery as you marry “till death do us part.”
What is the Protestant view of re-marriage?
It is allowed - especially if you are the “innocent party.”
What is the Islamic view of divorce?
It is accepted but seen as a last resort.
What are the steps that have to be taken for a Muslim couple to divorce?
1) Te husband says “I divorce you” three times
2) Iddah - a three month period of cohabitation in separate beds to allow for reconciliation and to prevent any concerns over the parentage of any children.
3) If there is no reconciliation the couple are divorced. Sex counts as reconciliation
4) The husband must repay any dowry and is expected to take custody of any children
What is the Islamic view of re-marriage?
It is allowed up to four times - however the fourth time is final and divorce is not allowed.
