Relationships Flashcards
What is sexual selection?
• Sexual selection suggests that characteristics that confer a reproductive advantage (i.e. are attractive to the opposite sex or provide an advantage over competitors for reproductive rights) are passed on to produce offspring with the best genes. This is effectively ‘survival of the sexiest.’ In sexual selection, an individual’s survival is not at stake, but rather their ability to leave more descendants.

What is natural selection?
• Natural selection suggests that characteristics that confer a survival advantage are passed on to produce offspring with the best genes. This is because these characteristics are adaptive and therefore individuals with these characteristics are more likely to survive to be able to reproduce.
