Legal ceremony giving a homosexual couple the same legal rights as a husband and wife
What is a re-constituted family?
Two sets of children (stepbrothers and sisters) become one family when their divorced parents marry each other
What is a nuclear family?
Mother, father and children living as a unit
Problems in a multi-ethnic society

What are the benefits of multi-ethnic society?
- Helps different people from different races and culture understand each other
- Wider variety of music, food, clothes and culture
- New people with new ideas
(B) How has beliefs about marriage changed in the UK
- Less people getting married, more people choosing cohabitation
- Fewer religious marriage ceremonies as more people are becoming atheists (2021 Census)
- Homosexuality more widely accepted
- Civil partnerships act 2004 meant same-sex relationships could have the same legal rights as married couples
- Less influence of the church
- Census showed decline in christianity
(B) Describe how attitudes towards family have changed in the UK
- Same sex families are more widely accepted
- More single parent families as divorce more widely accepted
- Extended families more common as cost of living rises
- Re-constituted families more common as re-marriage more common
(B) Describe attitudes towards family in one religion
- Christians believe God intended for all humans to be brought up in a loving family where they feel safest
- Procreation of kids extremely important, Bible “Be fruitful and multiply
- Family provides right place for a married couple to have children
- Provides stability and security for society - children raised in the correct moral setting and in the image of God
- Teach children the difference between right and wrong, children should honour and respect their parents
- Raise children as Christians and in christian faith, introduced to church when baptised
- Foundation of society
- Church is seen as a family of christians
- strengthens society
(B) Christian views toward sex outside marriage
Disagree
- Casual relationships are wrong
- Sex is special and should be saved for marriage
- Adultery forbidden in Ten commandments “You shall not commit adultery” and breaks marriage vows made before God
-“Got wants you to be holy and completely free from sexual immorality” - could apply to adultery or before marriage
- Married couples should be faithful to each other
- Some Christians believe pre-marital sex acceptable if:
- couple love each other, couple in a long term
committed relationship, intending to get married in
future
- promiscuity makes people vulnerable to STI’s

- cohabitation helps couples find out if they will be suited as marriage partners
- ‘Step’ towards marriage

Children
- honour, obey and respect parents
- care for parents in old age
Parents
- responsibility to get married and have children as its what God intended
-responsibility to love and support children and keep them safe
- christian parents to raise children as christians and have them baptised or christened, attending church and celebrating festivals
(B) Why is christian marriage important
Purpose
- Provide companionship, friendship and support
- Enjoy a sexual relationship within marriage and have children and raise a family
- lifelong commitment to another person, establishing permenant stable relationship teaching good and moral behaviour
- “man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife” Bible
Beliefs
- Marriage is a sacrament - ceremony in which god is involved
- believed to be a gift from God
- secure and safe environment for children to be raised as christians
- Marriage is not a necessity, Jesus wasnt married and monks and nuns are not to be married
(B) Christian beliefs about divorce
- Marriage intended to be for life “let no one seperate” Bible
Catholic Christians - disagree, jesus said divorce is wrong
- marriage is a sacrament and divorce would break promises of God
- remarriage not accepted and cannot take place in a catholic church
- legal seperation may be accepted in some cases e.g where cared of children needed, but marriage bond not broken
Protestant Christians - divorce not encouraged, but may sometimes be neccessary
- divorce must be acceptable as UK law allows it
- people can make mistakes and God will forgive their sins
- Up to the minister to decide wether a couple can remarry in their church
(B) Why is muslim marriage important?
Purpose
- Bring a man and woman together to have children
- share love, companionship and sex, Allah’s intention for humans
- To create a family and strengthen society
- All muslims should marry because prophet muhammed was married
- Marriage brings Allah’s blessing and forgiveness
Beliefs
- intended to be for life
- Many help their children to find the right partner (arranged marriages)
- Muslim women expected to marry within the islam faith so children will be raised as muslims
- Muslim men can marry outside religion as children follow the faith of the father
- Marriage seen as a legal contract
- Muslim men may have up to four wives but muslim women can only have one husband
- Islam encourages marriage, following example of Muhammed
- Allah believed to have created man and woman for eachother

- Mother and father have a responsibility to raise children as muslims
- family is the foundation of the Ummah (muslim community)
- Children are taught to show love, kindness, mercy and compassion to one another in the family
- Worldwide muslim family is the Ummah that all muslims are part of
- The family provides a healthy and loving environment for children
- Family life is the first level of community in islam
- Muslims believe it is important to marry and have a sexual relationship so they can procreate
- Family is where many religious activities take place e.g prayer and festivals
(B) Muslim attitudes to divorce
Agree (as a last resort)
- Marriage is a contract in islam not a promise to Allah
- The Qur’an allows muslims to divorce
- Islam has rules for how divorce is to happen and how divorced women and children are to be cared for
- The family is very important to Muslims and they feel it may be better for children to have divorced parents than to live with hatred and biterness
Disagree
- Muhammed (perfect example) did not divorce
- Muhammed said divorce was the most hated of all things that Allah has permitted
- Divorce may damage the lives of the children
- Divorce shows disrespect to the family and therefore Ummah
